The Word "TO"
The letter T is a cross — a vertical stave with a horizontal bar. The letter O is a circle. Watch the T and O slide toward each other. The T's horizontal bar becomes the horizontal arm of the crosshair. The T's vertical stave becomes the vertical arm. The O encircles the intersection. The two most common letters in the English language, placed next to each other, produce the Zodiac's grade sigil.
The Word "of"
The letter o is the circle. The lowercase f contains a vertical stem, a curved top hook, and a middle crossbar. As they merge, the f's top curved hook dissolves seamlessly into the o's top-right arc. The f's crossbars expand to form the sigil's horizontal arm, while the stem is locked into the vertical crosshair.
The Sigil Contains E and D
The Zodiac crosshair is presented first — the complete sigil. Then watch as E is revealed: the left half of the circle is its curved spine, the horizontal arm extends left as its top bar, the midpoint is its middle bar, the bottom of the left arc is its lower bar. The entire left hemisphere of the sigil is the letter E. Then D is revealed: the vertical center stroke is D's left stave, the entire right semicircle of the sigil is D's curved body. The right half of every Zodiac crosshair is the letter D.
The Signature

Every letter the Zodiac sent to the San Francisco Chronicle was signed with this symbol. Every researcher who received those letters saw a crosshair — a rifle sight, a brand, a graphic device. Nobody saw what the symbol had always contained: two letters, distributed across its left and right hemispheres, readable to the connoisseur who knew to look at the geometry rather than the shape.
The T and the O are the two most common letters in English — the first two letters of "to," the most common preposition, invisible precisely because of its frequency. The O and the F produce the circle and the cross from two adjacent letterforms whose geometric relationship makes the sigil inevitable once they touch. And the E and the D were hidden inside the completed sigil from the beginning, waiting for the reader who knew to trace the left half and the right half as separate letterforms.
