The Zodiac was not, this series proposes, sending these communications to law enforcement because he expected law enforcement to solve them. Toschi was the one investigator who seemed to the Zodiac to be in genuine, earnest pursuit: not merely processing cases, but actually trying to solve the problem. The Zodiac's letters to Toschi were, in this reading, the practitioner's attempt to establish the one relationship his psychology most required: a genuine adversarial equal, someone smart enough and persistent enough to deserve the practitioner's full attention as an opponent. Toschi, for all his skill and dedication, was not equipped with the specific spatial and esoteric intelligence the Zodiac's system required. He pursued the letters; he never penetrated them. The attention-seeking dimension of the communications — the letters to newspapers, the phone calls, the greeting cards — is consistent with the specific type of narcissism that requires external validation of internal superiority. The Zodiac knew, internally, that what he had built was extraordinary. Reading and comprehension are not the same thing. Comprehension and deduction are not the same thing. The BlackDahliaSolution website — this research series's prior analysis of which is documented in the entry of the same name — is a tutorial: it teaches the reader, step by step, the specific cipher methodology that the practitioner deployed across the traveling codeset corpus. It demonstrates the path cipher, the steganographic letter embedding, the bind-rune authentication mechanism. It shows the reader everything necessary to understand the system. Everything, that is, except one thing.
The circle. The radial extraction path requires a circular frame of reference — the practitioner's equivalent of the crosshair, the geometric modulus that anchors the path cipher in a specific coordinate system. The BDA website demonstrates the path extraction method without providing the circle. It shows the reader how to extract characters along a path without completing the demonstration of what shape that path takes, what coordinate system it refers to, what the geometric anchor is.
