She was born in 1831 in the Russian Empire, the granddaughter of a princess, a woman of extraordinary intelligence and extraordinary ambition who found herself, in middle age, in New York City, in 1875, founding what she called the Theosophical Society with Colonel Henry Steel Olcott. The Theosophical Society positioned itself as a spiritual organization that sought the synthesis of science, religion, and philosophy — a grand unified theory of the cosmos, the human soul, and the progression of civilizations through time. It attracted thousands of members across Europe and America, including some of the most educated and progressive people of the era. And at its center, in the writings Blavatsky produced at extraordinary speed and length, was an idea that would prove to be one of the most destructive in the history of Western thought.
The idea was "root races." Blavatsky proposed, in her massive 1888 work The Secret Doctrine, that humanity had evolved through a series of root races — massive civilizational epochs, each one corresponding to a different form of human being. The first root races were spiritual, non-physical beings. The later ones became increasingly material. The fifth root race — the Aryan race — was currently the dominant form of humanity, and it was, in Blavatsky's framework, the most spiritually advanced. The sixth and seventh root races would follow, even more evolved, even more spiritually refined. The Aryans, in this schema, were not merely a linguistic or cultural grouping. They were a step in cosmic evolution.
Blavatsky herself was not a straightforward racial theorist. Her framework was more complex and more mystical than the crude biological racism that would follow. She drew on Hindu and Buddhist cosmological traditions, on Kabbalah, on Neoplatonism, on her claimed encounters with Tibetan masters. Guido von List was born in Vienna in 1848 into a merchant family. He was, from early childhood, obsessed with Germanic mythology, the Austrian landscape, and a romanticized vision of the pre-Christian Teutonic past that bore little relationship to the actual archaeological and historical record but enormous relationship to the emotional needs of a German-speaking population experiencing the anxieties of rapid industrialization, political fragmentation, and social change. He was a journalist, a playwright, a poet, and a novelist — a man with genuine literary gifts and a genuine interior conviction that the ancient Germanic peoples had possessed a spiritual knowledge that had been suppressed by the Roman Catholic Church's conversion of Europe.
In 1902, at the age of fifty-four, List underwent a cataract operation on both eyes. The operation left him entirely blind for eleven months. He spent those months in darkness — and when his sight returned, he claimed that something extraordinary had happened in the void. His "inner eye" had opened. The Hagal rune deserves special attention. List called it the Mother Rune — the source from which all other runes could be derived geometrically, through the hexagonal matrix formed by the rune's structure. This was one of List's most elegant conceptual moves: by making one rune the geometric source of all others, he made the entire system appear to have a unified, mathematically coherent origin. The Völkisch movement — the word means "of the folk" or "of the people" in its ethnic sense — was a broad cultural and political tendency in Germany and Austria from the 1870s through the 1930s. The Thule Society — founded in Munich in 1918, named for the legendary northern land that Greek and Norse myth had placed at the edge of the known world, the supposed original homeland of the Aryan race — was the most direct transmission pathway from List's Ariosophy to the Nazi movement. Rudolf Hess, Alfred Rosenberg, and Dietrich Eckart — three of the most significant early Nazi figures — were Thule members. The Armanen tradition survived the defeat of the Third Reich through several transmission channels. The Tarot's Hanged Man — Arcanum XII — is the same archetype. In the Rider-Waite image, a figure hangs upside down from a T-shaped cross, one leg crossed behind the other in a figure-four position, serene rather than suffering, illuminated rather than defeated. The card's meaning in Western Hermetic tradition is surrender, sacrifice, and the revelation that comes from radical perspective shift — seeing the world from the inverted position, which is the initiated position. The Zodiac's Dripping Pen card — sent in 1970 — is a Tarot card. It is Arcanum XII. The Hanged Man. The Dripping Pen card is the Tarot's Hanged Man. The SIKIKEY signature — appearing in what one researcher identifies as a letter connected to Edwards — is a bind rune construction. The K and I combine into an Othala/Issa bind rune. The E is an open Othala. The Y is a Yr analog. The historical facts about Helena Blavatsky, Guido von List, the Völkisch movement, the SS's runic symbolism, the Aryan Nations prison networks, and Wotansvolk are drawn from openly available historical sources and one researcher's source documents, as documented in this research series. The specific connections to the Zodiac case, the Ramsey note S.B.T.C. cipher, and the Old Norse letter are analytical interpretations developed by one researcher. The Zodiac Killer case remains officially unsolved. Edwards died in prison in 2011. Nothing in this document asserts criminal guilt beyond what courts have established.
